The Buying SCIL Challenge

buy-local-and-carry-onToday I begin my SCIL Challenge…

What is that you may say… Oh let me tell you… SCIL is Small, Community, Independent & Local Businesses that is. So for one week only that’s what I’ll be shopping. It is time to take back the buying power and keep money in our community. (Read why here)

So for everything I need I will be shopping in my community, the community I work and the one in proximity of those… I have Identified Bronzeville to South Shore as my ‘Hood. I will be buying everything in the community in stores that are independently owned. I also have included farmers markets (as they are included in buying local).

This is not just a one week home run. This week is meant for me to truly push myself on where I spend my money and how. After this week (and already a bit for those that know me) I will continue to push myself to support these businesses.

Join me!

Cleanin’ Out Me Closet (Just to fill it back up)

dogoodieOver shopping is one of the most deadliest sins in life, according to me. I mean think about it. How can we spend so much money on ourselves while others are out there without decent clothes on their backs? How can we justify walking into a boutique when others can’t even walk into a Walmart and get clothes?

So lets fix this…. Or kinda….

Okay, so I got a HUGE shopping urge Tuesday and boy when I say huge I was ready to spend my rent… (Sometimes you just need a pickurl-5 me up or 7) So rather and go blow all my money and be mad later. (Buyers remorse is real) I decided to clean out my own closet…. So that my friend, is step 1.

Step 1: Clean out your closet. If you havent worn it in over 12 months it needs to go bye bye. If you don’t just love an item in you closet (unless it is sentimental) it needs to go away. AND if it makes you look fat or fit your shape correctly (no matter how cute) TOSS IT!

Here is what I came up with:

Well what do you do once you have all these clothes just sitting there staring at you (not to mention dollars you spent on thoseclothes with eyes – duh clothes need eyes to stare) Anyway (because apparently today I digress worse than other times) But anyway… What do you do with those clothes? Trash? NO Give them to a relative that will latertrash them? NO How about donate them to a local Salvation Army or Women’s/Men’s Shelter? YES!!!!!

Step Two: Donate to a good cause (Hence the good for others part in this Do Goodie of the Week)

The Next question is so how do I cure my shopping craving? EASY!

You thrift.

Step Three: Head to your location thrift store like Salvation Army or such. BUT only buy items you can LOVE. You’d be amazed at what you’d find at thrift and second hand stores. While sometimes you have to dig, its worth it and also that can be part of the fun!

Shoes I thrifted 🙂 $5 (They were half off hehehe)

But there is more! There are more reasons you can feel good about thrifting and in this case there can be more good done than goodies for you! The money you spend goes to support the community in three ways: Pays for Jobs for those who work in the stores, Helps support the men in the rehabilitation centers & other caritable causes Salvation Army supports then the last third of the money you spend goes to the Salvation Army causes in the rest of the world (like creating clean water and promoting health etc)…

Now don’t you feel good???

Goodie!

Example of an outfit I thrifted all except the shoes and jacket.

Do Goodie of the Week

“When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. That’s my religion.” – Abraham Lincoln

dogoodie

Well this isn’t about religion.. This is about doing good and feeling good… So why not do something good for yourself while doing something good for someone else?

My theory behind this is to make a conscience choice to do something good for yourself and for others in the everyday activities you do with just a little more effort than usual.

For example: Which is my first Do Goodie of the Week choose a new place to eat that is good for your body and good for your community… Do you know a place that gives its leftover food to charity, or a place that uses only recycled goods? Or do you need a new shirt? Well look for a new place that donates clothes to charity etc….

This way you treat yourself and you treat others while trying something new!…  Do a little good for someone else, get a little goodie for you… Makes you want to say: Goodie! 🙂

Need ideas? Don’t worry I’ll share my Do Goodies with you so you can join me to!!!

Happy Food in New York!

us

Welcome to New York, that’s what this place said to me! Well okay it really said hey you are hungry and the sign said natural… This place gets a thumbs up! Usually when I travel to a new town it takes me a while to find “that place”. I just step out of my hotel and walk, take the bus or catch a cab downtown.  This time in New York it was easy! I found yummy healthy  it just two or three blocks from my hotel.  And its name is Pret.

So what’s the big deal with Pret you may ask me?

made_today_gone_today“Pret creates handmade, natural food, avoiding the obscure chemicals, additives and preservatives common to so much of the ‘prepared’ and ‘fast’ food on the market today.”

The food is also made and gone in the same day! They give all the leftovers to charity. How awesome?!?!

What I ate today!

I ordered the vegetarian sandwich  with a kale spread shredded carrots, lettuce, mozzarella cheese and more on a whole wheat french baguette roll; a bag of almonds (for later), honey tangerine juice (that was awesome), and sparkling Yoga Bunny Detox drink (grape juice with herb infusions), and a mint tea! Yes I had a fat moment but It was worth it! The food was lunch and dinner (with the help of ice) and I’ll eat the almonds for snack later… PERFECTION

After looking up its locations I found out it is in Chicago too! Yay me!

This also can start my Do Goodie of the Week! Learn more about that soon!
