Martiin Luther King III, Rev. Al Sharpton, Roslyn M. Brock and Rev. Jesse Jackson (2nd-R) march in the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Freedom Walk June 22, 2013

On June 22, 2013, thousands were asked to “Take a Step” in the 50th anniversary march in honor of the original Walk to Freedom/Freedom Walk led in Detroit by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was able to be one of the thousands, with the Rainbow PUSH Youth League… [Yay Road trip!] Martin Luther King III, Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton participated in Saturday’s march and rally.

SONY DSCIT was a day that was of great importance to experience the walk and also the rally after. One common theme was the road is not yet over. The fight is not yet won and all that Dr King fought wanted in this walk is not yet over.

Detroit is still in state of need of reconstruction. There is much progress needed.

“If you don’t take the march to Lansing, if you don’t take the march to D.C., if you don’t take the march to your own neighborhood – then marching don’t mean nothing,” said President of the Detroit branch of the NAACP, Reverend Wendell Anthony.

But Why Detroit?

On that day 50 years ago, in what is considered to be the original debut of his now-famous “I Have a Dream Speech,” King told tens of thousands of people that it was time for the government and society to get serious about providing opportunities and parity in employment, education, housing and the overall quality of life for persons of color.

It was great to be apart of something like this and to be able to discuss it with people my age after. It was also a learning experience to be able to organize this trip (of course with help) and to see that our generation can mobilize and is ready to lead.

Everyday is A Special Day

So while creating my calendar and looking for holidays to write down I noticed… Everyday is a holiday… Not in a think big mindset or anything like that.. but seriously everyday is a day for something… Like today (June 10) is Ice Tea day…. It’s like spirit day everyday has a theme… But spirit day is not a week anymore it is a year. GOOOOO team me!

Here are a few that I found to be of my liking for the month of June & July.

15 Smile Power Day SMILEEEEEE!!!!!!

978184953103018 International Panic Day (Yea I do this on a daily a good book for this day is Now Panic & Freak OUT)

June 18th is also National Splurge Day – Oh yeah!! (so maybe the splurge is linked to the panic…..  yea i sometimes panic after  I splurge..)

29 Hug Holiday Give a hug to someone who needs it! (On this day I will hug everyone at work instead of shaking hands…. maybe)

30 Meteor Day On this day I will watch Meteor Man…. lol

JULY is:

  • National Blueberry Month
  • National Anti-Boredom Month
  • Unlucky Month for weddings
  • National Cell Phone Courtesy Month
  • National Hot Dog Month
  • National Ice Cream Month
  • Week 2 Nude Recreation Week

I Forgot Day

I Forgot Day, by definition, today is not a day to remember. So, just what are you forgetting? Can you even remember? Is it important? Hopefully, not.

5 is Work-a-Holic Day. It recognizes the guy, or gal, who works all of the time… also known as me.

26th is  All or Nothing Day. How will your day go?… Maybe I can do nothing on this day

What Do you think of the Dikembe Mutombo Geico Commercial?

What do you think of this? It has been on for a while, I finally decided to google it and post my thought… Me no Likey.

I personally don’t like it. Its like oh big, illiterate (only because of his accent I say that) black man stupidly block everything even kids cereal while the white banjo players look on HA?. I completely miss the point of this and Geico… Bring back the gecko.. #Fail And if you say i’m too sensitive I say you desensitized….

So this is ok? Lil Wayne

In Future’s new song ‘Karate Chop.’ Lil Wayne says “Beat that pu**y up like Emmett Till.” So this is the second time Lil Wayne has mentioned Emmett Till in his lyrics, and people love it right? The other time was Swizzy, Wayne says “Beating up your block, yeah I get my Emmett Till on”…. sooooo this is okay?

Before and after his beating beyond recognition

Before and after his beating beyond recognition

No, it is not okay on so many levels…. One sooooo I’m a lady and apparently it’s cool for my vagina to get beat beyond recognition? Ummm yea so i’m not okay with that.. yea ow. *crosses legs at the thought of pain*

But the real issue is you are mentioning Emmett Till like its okay to just disrespect a person that was brutally murdered. But maybe you don’t know the story behind it…

Well Emmett Till was a Chicago teen that was murdered for talking and maybe even whistling to a white woman at a local grocery store in 1955. This happened while he was visiting relatives in the Mississippi Delta region. Reports say Till was dared to talk to a white woman after he showed his friends a picture of his integrated school… Boys being boys right?

Well a few days later Roy Bryant (the woman’s husband) and his brother J.W. Milam went to Till’s great-uncle’s house. The two grown men too the teen to a barn, tortured him and gouged out one of his eyes. They shot the him in the head, tied a cotton gin fan around his neck (with barbwire) and threw his body in the Tallahatchie River. Three days later his body was recovered.

And this story is okay to just casually mention and compare to a lady part? Hmmm… So this is okay? Think again. And please don’t say oh you are overly sensitive… I say you aren’t sensitive enough…

mainFor more info: PBS has a timeline of events and also the gut wrenching confession of the killers…

UPDATE I can officially say yes the lyrics will be changing after hearing a conversation with Epic Records CEO LA Reid. Reid says Future understands the severity of the comment and also wanted the line removed from the song.

It’s always a little crazy when you try to censor an artist, He’s [speaking of Lil Wayne] not even on my label…. But we will have the line changed before the songs official release. – LA Reid of Epic Records

And there you have it! The power of speech.

However on twitter there were mixed feelings…

Happy Food in New York!

Me and the Mint Tea

Welcome to New York, that’s what this place said to me! Well okay it really said hey you are hungry and the sign said natural… This place gets a thumbs up! Usually when I travel to a new town it takes me a while to find “that place”. I just step out of my hotel and walk, take the bus or catch a cab downtown.  This time in New York it was easy! I found yummy healthy  it just two or three blocks from my hotel.  And its name is Pret.

So what’s the big deal with Pret you may ask me?

made_today_gone_today“Pret creates handmade, natural food, avoiding the obscure chemicals, additives and preservatives common to so much of the ‘prepared’ and ‘fast’ food on the market today.”

The food is also made and gone in the same day! They give all the leftovers to charity. How awesome?!?!

What I ate today!

I ordered the vegetarian sandwich  with a kale spread shredded carrots, lettuce, mozzarella cheese and more on a whole wheat french baguette roll; a bag of almonds (for later), honey tangerine juice (that was awesome), and sparkling Yoga Bunny Detox drink (grape juice with herb infusions), and a mint tea! Yes I had a fat moment but It was worth it! The food was lunch and dinner (with the help of ice) and I’ll eat the almonds for snack later… PERFECTION

After looking up its locations I found out it is in Chicago too! Yay me!

This also can start my Do Goodie of the Week! Learn more about that soon!
